The Panchakshara
Om Namah Shivaya is known as the Panchakshara — the mantra of five sacred syllables: Na Ma Shi Va Ya. Each syllable corresponds to one of the five Pancha Bhutas (great elements) and one of Shiva's five cosmic functions:
- Na — Earth — Nigraha (concealment)
- Ma — Water — Srishti (creation)
- Shi — Fire — Sthiti (sustenance)
- Va — Air — Samhara (dissolution)
- Ya — Ether — Anugraha (grace)
To chant this mantra is to traverse the entire universe — from gross matter to pure consciousness — in five syllables.
The Practice
For maximum benefit, traditional practice recommends:
- Sankalpa — Set an intention before beginning
- 108 repetitions minimum — Using a Rudraksha mala
- Auspicious times — Pradosh Kaal (1.5 hours before sunset on Trayodashi), Monday mornings, or Maha Shivaratri
- Accompanying ritual — Abhishekam with water, milk, honey, and bilva leaves amplifies the vibration
The mantra requires no initiation. It is freely available to all, in all conditions of life. Shiva himself is said to have taught it first to the goddess Parvati as the highest and most accessible path to liberation.
